Be Prepared for a Hurricane

As the rain continues to pour, you start thinking about being ready for the hurricane. This may be a little late, but it's been pretty hot for awhile where I'm at. And it's only now that we've started to get a taste of some rain showers.

It's good to be prepared just in case of emergencies. When Hurricane Ike struck a few years ago, I wasn't exactly prepared, it was crazy! I don't think anyone expected that much damage. So now I want to be prepared in case anything similar happens again so here's my little list below, but this is just what I would personally do or have in stock in case a hurricane would strike :-)

  • Create a plan for you and your family in case you have to evacuate
  • Look up locations of the nearest shelters for evacuation
  • Get a map of your area, if the power's out there wont be any mapquest or google maps to help you find your way around town especially if you need to take a detour because a tree down and is blocking the road

  • Any outdoor equipment or furniture like grills and patio chairs should be brought inside
  • Prepare to bar windows and doors from the strong winds with some plywood
  • Have some extra plywood laying around just in case you need to make any quick repairs after the hurricane, like a leaking ceiling/roof
  • Stock up on some food to last a week- canned goods that can be stored for longer periods of time are good to have around
  • Have a good supply of water that will last for a few weeks just in case
  • Ice and an Ice Chest
  • Get some flashlights, lamps, and batteries
  • A battery powered radio to listen to the news!

  • Fully charge your cellphones before the hurricane
  • A generator would be very useuful if you can afford to buy one
  • Some prescription medications - have a good supply if you are on prescription medications because who knows when the pharmacies will be open again
  • For people who wear contacts, don't forget your contact lens solution, or you can just wear your glasses
  • Take good care of your pets too! Take them with you if you evacuate!
  • Rain gear - rain boots, umbrellas, rain coats, etc...
  • It's also good to have an extra first aid kit because you never know what may happen!
  • And have some CA$H - those ATM machines or card scanners may be out of service!

Rain, rain, rain ready!

It seems that the season is starting to get colder, and rain clouds are appearing more often. So are you ready for some rain, rain , and more rain?

Because I tend to travel quite far between home and school, or work, or wherever else, I always like to be prepared for bad weather, the last thing I want is to be soaking wet once I arrive.

One thing you should always have is an umbrella. A small foldable one you can easily stash in your bag is always handy to have. There are several ones in different shades of colors and styles. My favorite umbrellas are form totes. They're so cute, and they automatically close and open with a simple push of a button. So it's really convenient when you're getting out of your car, or getting ready to board a train. Don't leave home without it!
A nice pair of rain boots are also great to have to get you out of a muddy situation! So if it's pouring outside cast those heels aside and put some of these rain boots on. Sure, some of them may not be the most fashionable thing to wear. But it sure beats getting sooaked! One thing I hate when it rains is when the bottom of my jeans, or socks get wet from the rain. Or when you're walking along a sidewalk and a car speeds by splashing some mud onto your legs! So I never think twice about wearing some nice rain boots.
Look for one that fits well, and that is high enough to cover your legs! GEtting one in black is always a good idea because it will match everything! And it never hurts to own just 1 pair, because you never know when you'll need it!

A nice rain coat or jacket will also keep your clothes from getting wet. This may seem like something only kids wear, but grown-ups can wear them too. Just look for one that has a nice fit and style. And one with a bright color will definitely add a pop of sunshine in such dreary weather.
And if you're a lady who simply can't walk out the door without wearing makeup, wear one that's waterproof that won't smear or smudge! Just remember that the main point of being prepared for the rainy season is to simply avoid getting wet!

So why don't you share some tips and advice so we can all be prepared for the rainy season!

Pirates of The Caribbean on Stranger Tides movie review

Read if you dare, but be warned this review may contain spoilers!

I watched the 4th installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I must say it was different or the movie had a different feel to it. The basic plot is that everyone is after the Fountain of Youth, pirates, The British, as well as the Spaniards! And word is getting around that Captain Jack Sparrow is recruiting a crew for a quest to the Fountain of Youth! But as it turns out there may be an impostor, who? Sorry, I can't spoil that for you :)

Can you guess who that shadowy figure Jack Sparrow is fighting with?

Also did you ever wonder if Jack Sparrow plans it all out or makes it up as he goes along? .... He answers this in the movie.

I guess the absence of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan-Turner gave it a different feel. But not having those characters back was probably for the best since their relationship seems overplayed and overused and it was refreshing to see new characters being introduced such as Blackbeard played by Ian McShane and Angelica played by Penelope Cruz.

I believe Johnny Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow beautifully. But compared to the previous films I thought his chacracter was fun but a bit more serious. But this subtle change in his character may have been brought by his encounter with Angelica, a former flame.

Blackbeard is regarded as a notorious pirate feared by many including pirates alike. The ship he captains The Queen Anne's Revenge is rather impressive as it packs a lot of firepower and is possibly under Blackbeards strange powers. He seems to be able to sail and captain the ship as though it were on "autocaptain". Blackbeard appears to be very intimidating but his character isn't as strong as Capt. Barbossa's in the 1st Pirates movie or Davey Jones. I think he could have been made to be more viscious!

The mermaids were a lovely addition to the story, they were beautiful monsters. The fight that ensued between the mermaids and pirates was great! They seemed more like piranhas with a woman's face!

Also, I wish that even though they're no longer in the story that The Flying Dutchman could've made a cameo appearance in the film. It would have been a nice surprise for fans of the movie to see.

Overall the movie was really good, it was nice to see Captain Jack Sparrow in action again. Speaking of action this movie is certainly not lacking in that. There are sword fights, gun fights, voodoo, coconut fights? and of course rum!

I enjoyed the film! And though it was rather strange, or should I say different because of the absence of certain characters it still is a movie about Pirates of the Caribbean!

Osama Bin Laden is Dead!

So I woke up early this morning and came across this news on the internet stating that Osama Bin Laden is dead! He died this Monday morning, May 2, 2011. It seems that after a long search, the man who became infamous for the September 11, 2011 attack on the US, who was able to evade the radar for years was finally killed in a firefight in his hideout.

"U.S. officials said the CIA tracked bin Laden to his location, then elite troops from Navy SEAL Team Six, a top military counter-terrorism unit, flew to the hideout in four helicopters. Bin Laden was shot in the head in an ensuing firefight, these officials said, adding that he and his guards had resisted his attackers. U.S. personnel identified him by facial recognition, the official said, declining to say whether DNA analysis had also been used." - This was taken from Yahoo News

Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day is around the corner.... I'm still thinking what to do. Have you guys figured it out? Just in case no one has I thought of a few ideas that aren't too expensive and would make great presents. If you have any gift ideas then do share them as well :)

A water can filled with various knick-knacks for the gardener within. I saw Bath and Body Works have their signature collection stacked in a can for $35. Maybe you can make your own.
A trip to the spa. It sounds like a relaxing idea! You can purchase a gift certificate to a nice spa, it's a luxurious treatment and if you search around there are some spas that give a good deal during special occasions. I f a spa trip is too pricey then perhaps some spa accessories like scrubs and body oil will be a good alternative.
Flowers are the simplest gifts that's been given for every occasion. And they're the most common way of showing appreciation. You can make your own arrangement to make it more personal and pick her favorite flowers.

Another simple and inexpensive idea is to prepare a full course meal for her. Perhaps outdoors and just treat her like a queen for a day where she doesn't have to do any household chores.
For the mom who likes to bake and cook you can buy or sew an apron gift set. And you can embroider her initials or her name or maybe a short message on it to add a personal touch!
These are just some ideas that I have. If you have some ideas share them so we'll all have great ideas to prepare for Mother's Day. Ideas multiply when you share them!

The Royal Wedding

I watched the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton. I didn't intend to watch it but stumbled upon their official royal channel on youtube. I felt like I would be missing out on something important in this era if I didn't watch, I'ts history in the making! And I was a bit curious too! And although Kings and Queens are things of the past they're still a symbol, a relic of an old monarchy that if wasn't present wouldn't have formed today's governments. The wedding was very long! but it was beautiful :)

I thought her gown looked very conservative yet elegant at the same time. It was a lovely gown crafted to be worn by royalty and the delicate lace veil made the bride look very demure yet stunning.

Her sister helps carry the train, She's also wearing a lovely maid of honor's dress.
The two couple walke down the aisle with both the Prince's brother and Kate's sister following behind.
She looks gorgeous here, don't you think so? The lace detail and silver tiara with her veil make her really look like a princess!

So did anyone watch it today too? and if not will you watch the rebroadcast? What did you think of the wedding? Did you like it or not? And did you like the bride's gown?

Introduction

Welcome to my blog!

Who am I? I'm an island rose just like the title of my blog! I'm an island girl and I love the sun, sea, and sand! If I wasn't born the way I am, I probably would have been a dolphin or mermaid. I'm basically a fish out of water!

Why on earth am I blogging?
Frankly, I have some time on my hands, I'm a bit opinionated, and I felt a bit bored one day and then I discovered blogging! So I thought to myself why not voice out what I think, and talk about random important or not so improtant things! And this seems to be the perfect medium :)  I'll consider this blog as a journal that I'm willing to share. I also like to share ideas with other people! It's fun and intersting to learn something from someone else's persepective.

What am I going to blog about?
Anything to everything! I'll review whatever it is I find interesting, and what I'd like to share. But keep in mind they'll come from my perspective and we don't necessarily look at things with the same set of eyes. We all think differently but you are welcome to share your views as well :)

So whether you're just looking around or if you plan to comment and drop a line or two I'd like to say Welcome and Thanks for stopping by :)

Ciao!
